How the media feels about the 2016 Acura ILX

The Acura ILX is a true luxury car in every sense and a real high-end model with all the refinement and comfort you want, all at a competitive price.

The 2016 Acura ILX steals the spotlight

When Acura introduced the all-new ILX, the Japanese manufacturer finally had a true entry-level luxury sedan, not just a clone of the Honda Civic as was the case with the previous generation. The Acura ILX is a true luxury car in every sense and a real high-end model with all the refinement and comfort you want, all at a competitive price.

Unveiled with significant changes in 2016, the ILX was quickly sought after by the media who had the opportunity to drive it. Here’s what they had to say about Acura’s most affordable model.

Under the hood is where most of the “aggressive changes” reside. To start with, a new engine sits proudly in the engine bay. All 2016 ILX Acuras will be powered by a 2.4-litre, DOHC 16-valve inline four that is direct injected. Horsepower is rated at 201 while peak torque is rated at 180 lb-ft. Both are noticeable improvements from the 150 hp and 140 lb-ft of torque produced by the previous 2.0L engine.

Next in Acura’s bag of improvements was putting in an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic to replace the previous generation’s five-speed conventional automatic. In addition, Acura put a torque converter in this eight-speed which, according to the graph shown at the Canadian launch, reduces shift shock. The use of a torque convertor in a dual-clutch transmission is a first and given parent company Honda’s penchant for putting new technology into entry-level vehicles may be unexpected, it's not surprising. I suspect there are more reasons than that for using up the space and weight savings offered by a dual-clutch automatic.

Where you can’t really see them, changes have been made to improve chassis rigidity, which includes three main modifications to the structure. First and most easily noticed is that the vehicle tends to be quieter. Second is that the vehicle becomes safer by being able to resist intrusion into the structure, due to the addition of high-strength and ultra-high strength steel. Third, improved chassis rigidity makes suspension calibration easier and allows for improvements in handling, braking and ride quality – Autogo.ca

Driving the 2016 Acura ILX A-SPEC

The ILX A-SPEC rides sporty first, luxury second, with the body tautly sprung closely to the big wheels and an athletic stiffness demonstrated with a touch of softness around the edges. Shoppers who enjoy a suspension calibrated for direct and precise responses and confident high-speed browsing of their favorite back-road without ruining ride quality on a long highway trip or around town, will find this setup to be nicely dialed in.

Brakes are calibrated nicely, too -- not overly sensitive or super sporty. They engage hard and fast from even a light touch on the pedal, adding confidence and getting the ILX stationary in a serious hurry when called upon.

Steering is quick and light -- and though it’s not huge on feel or feedback, the fast ratio and minimal effort required at the wheel contribute to a playful feeling when drivers push it a little.

For me, the ILX’s big appeal is the new powetrain. Most competitors have gone to turbocharging, though the ILX stays true to Acura’s roots, generating power instead from an honest-to-goodness, hard-working, high-revving 4-cylinder VTEC engine that loves to spin fast – Auto123

Well-equipped and with its powerful four-cylinder, 2.4-liter engine developing 201 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque, the Acura ILX now has what it takes to compete with the other models in the segment. It also offers plenty of active safety systems that buyers may not expect to find in a vehicle that starts at less than $ 30,000.
