Everything you need to know about Acura’s AcuraWatch safety system

Published on October 30 2017

Standard on all new Acura vehicles, AcuraWatch is a set of driver assistance technologies that can not only warn the driver of a potential accident, but also prevent the accident if the driver does not react.

A wide range of sensors and radars monitor the road and the trajectory of the vehicle to identify hazards quickly enough to avoid them. There’s a lot of technology at play here, but everything comes together to create an appeasing and comfortable driving environment where the driver feels at ease. Moreover, these systems are designed to let the driver work and are therefore not too intrusive.

Let's take a closer look at the different technologies in the AcuraWatch system by first starting with Adaptive Cruise Control, or ACC.

Adaptive Cruise Control

Adaptive cruise control maintains a predetermined distance with the vehicle in front of us when the cruise control is activated. In other words, your Acura will automatically slow down if the vehicle ahead slows down or brakes to keep that distance. Then, if the vehicle ahead accelerates again, the system will pick up speed to keep pace. This leads to a more comfortable and peaceful drive on the highway.

Warning and prevention system for lane departure

The Acura Lane Departure Warning System (LDW) monitors the lines on the road to ensure that your Acura doesn’t go off-track. If this happens, a warning will sound to notify the driver. However, if the driver is unable to correct the course in time, the Lane Departure Warning System (LKAS) will be able to correct the course automatically.

Forward collision warning with automatic braking

The Forward Collision Warning (FCW) detects the presence of another vehicle or object in front of you. If this other vehicle brakes suddenly, the collision warning system will be able to warn the driver. If the latter does not brake, the automatic braking system (CMBS) automatically applies the brakes to prevent an accident.

These systems combine with other features like a blind spot warning system and a cross-traffic monitoring system to create a safety barrier for the driver and improve occupant safety.
