2017 Acura MDX vs. 2017 Acura RDX: Which one is the best for you?

Published on June 28 2017

The multiplication of SUV’s and crossovers on the market shows that there are different needs for different people. For instance, large families will tend to look at more spacious options with a third-row offering. Others might appreciate more of a small package, in order to benefit from its small size and versatility. Whatever the case may be, Acura has all the needs covered with the MDX and the RDX. Both SUV’s, however, have different particularities. Let’s take a look at how they compare.

Versatile interiors in the RDX and MDX in Ottawa, Ontario

Inside, the MDX offers a six or seven passenger configuration. This interior features second-row captain’s chairs with centre console storage, and there are available ventilated front seats for a little bit more comfort.

The RDX supplies great amounts of comfort for five passengers, it may not have a 3rd row like the MDX, but the Easy fold-down 60/40 split rear seatback makes it a great, versatile transport vehicle. With the seats down, the cargo space climbs up to 2178 litres, which is enough space to carry all kinds of objects.

On the cargo space side, the MDX is also adaptable. Behind the 3rd row, there are 447 litres of space. Fold the 3rd row and get 1230 litres. Finally, with all the rows behind the front rows folded, the cargo space goes up to 2575 litres.

Both the MDX and the RDX offer 12-volt power outlets for electronic devices, but only the MDX supplies an AC power outlet (115-volt) on the TECH, ELITE and SPORT HYBRID versions. Both models feature HandsFreeLink-Bluetooth wireless mobile phone interface with handy steering wheel-mounted controls, and both models have standard multi-angle rearview camera with guidelines offered. However, the MDX’s Elite and Sport Hybrid variants come with a surround view camera system for a better visibility.

Great power and efficiency in both the MDX and RDX IN Ottawa, Ontario

Mechanically, both models get the Acura 3.5-litre, Direct Injection SOHC, i-VTEC V6. The performance figures are rated at 290 hp and 267 lb-ft of torque on the MDX and 279 hp and 252 lb-ft of torque on the RDX. Note that the new SPORT HYBRID version of the MDX is powered by a combination of the 3.0-litre, SOHC, i-VTEC V6 and an electric motor.

The RDX gets a 6-speed automatic transmission with Sequential SportShift paddle shifters and Grade Logic Control, while the MDX is geared with the 9-speed automatic transmission with Sequential SportShift paddle shifters and Grade Logic Control. Fuel economy on the RDX is roughly the same on both the RDX and the MDX with 10.7 l/100 km combined but the Sport Hybrid version of the MDX is a little lower with 9.0 l/100 km combined.

The RDX and the MDX are two of the greatest SUVs on the market. Whether you are looking to haul a maximum amount of people with the MDX, or to drive and park around the city and benefit from a versatile cargo arrangement for the RDX, Acura has you covered. Come and see both at Camco Acura today!
